What it is
Calendula extract is derived from the flowers of Calendula officinalis, a member of the Asteraceae family used medicinally for over two thousand years. Oral care formulations use standardised hydroalcoholic or glycolic extracts with defined flavonoid and triterpene content.
How it works
The anti-inflammatory effect is driven by three compound classes:
Flavonoids — isorhamnetin and narcissin. These inhibit COX-2 and suppress pro-inflammatory cytokines, particularly IL-1β. Reduced IL-1β in periodontal tissues correlates with decreased probing depth and reduced gingival bleeding scores.
Triterpenes (oleanolic and ursolic acids). Interact with the NF-κB transcription pathway, blocking downstream inflammatory gene expression. They also stimulate fibroblast proliferation, accelerating mucosal wound healing.
Polysaccharides. Form a protective film over the oral mucosa, reducing irritation and maintaining moisture.
What research shows
A randomised clinical trial (Enshaieh et al., 2007) demonstrated that a 5% calendula gel resolved aphthous ulcers approximately two days faster than hydrocortisone ointment. A separate trial evaluated calendula mouthrinse in chronic gingivitis: after 6 weeks the Bleeding on Probing (BOP) index fell by 34% versus 18% in the chlorhexidine group, with no tooth staining as a side effect (Khairnar et al., 2013, J Indian Soc Periodontol).
In vitro, the extract shows activity against Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans (MIC 0.5–2.0 mg/mL), broadening its relevance in cheilitis and early oral candidiasis.
Where it is used
- Gels and rinses for stomatitis, gingivitis and aphthous ulcers
- Toothpastes for sensitive gums
- Post-procedure care products after professional cleaning
In QDRO formulas
Calendula extract is a cornerstone anti-inflammatory in the v.daily line. It works in synergy with allantoin (tissue regeneration) and chamomile extract (additional COX-2 inhibition), forming a calming trio for irritated gum tissue.
Safety
Calendula officinalis extract is assessed by the CIR as safe at concentrations up to 5% in rinse-off mucosal products and up to 2% in leave-on applications. The only relevant contraindication is allergy to Asteraceae plants (ragweed, chrysanthemum). Reaction risk in the general population is below 0.1%.
QDRO verdict: we use it — a plant-derived anti-inflammatory with clinically confirmed efficacy against gingivitis and stomatitis.
