Baicalin

What it is

Baicalin is a flavonoid extracted from the roots of Baikal skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis). The plant grows widely in Siberia, Mongolia, and northeastern China — its Latin name "baicalensis" derives from Lake Baikal, near which it was first described by botanists.

In traditional Chinese medicine, skullcap root (黄芩, huang qin) has been used for millennia to treat inflammation, fever, and infections. Baicalin is the primary bioactive molecule of this plant.

How it works

Baicalin acts on inflammation through two independent mechanisms:

COX-2 inhibition. Cyclooxygenase-2 is the enzyme that initiates prostaglandin synthesis — the mediators of pain and inflammation. Baicalin blocks this enzyme similarly to synthetic NSAIDs, but without their systemic side effects since it is applied topically.

Cytokine suppression. Baicalin reduces production of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF-α — the key molecules sustaining chronic inflammation in gingivitis and periodontitis.

Antiviral activity. Proven activity against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) — relevant for people with recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

Efficacy

Clinically: regular use of baicalin-containing preparations reduces the gingival bleeding index in gingivitis. A unique feature — unlike synthetic anti-inflammatories, baicalin does not suppress fibroblast proliferation. Fibroblasts are responsible for tissue repair, and their activity is maintained when baicalin is used — inflammation decreases, but healing is not inhibited.

Safety

Well-studied in traditional medicine and modern clinical research. Topical oral application is safe. No data on systemic absorption in significant amounts during local use.

Baicalin's low water solubility is a technological challenge for manufacturers — it requires special solubilization systems for incorporation into aqueous formulas.

Role in QDRO formula

Baicalin is the foundation of the anti-inflammatory profile of the v.pro line. We use it in synergy with Tienchi Ginseng (Panax notoginseng): baicalin reduces inflammation while notoginsensides stop bleeding — two mechanisms that complement each other.
